ALICE SPRINGS
In the early days of European settlement only the most adventurous pioneers travelled to Australia's interior. Today the rugged backdrop of the West MacDonnell Ranges makes Alice Springs a great base for modern adventurers like yourself! The history and heritage of Alice Springs overflows with a melting pot of characters - in the late 1800's and early 1900's only the most intrepid explorers braved its rugged environment. From Afghan cameleers to flying doctors, today it is possible to pay homage to their legacy at various historic sites around the town. If time permits plan a few extra days in 'The Alice' and check out the popular attractions.
ULURU, KATA TJUTA, KINGS CANYON, and the RED CENTRE
Rising from the desert like an enormous ship in the distance, Uluru (Ayers Rock) is Australia's most famous natural icon. The sandstone monolith stands 348 metres high, and unbelievably, has most of its bulk below the surface. It is located 440 kilometres south-west of Alice Springs in the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park.
Some 40 km to the west of Uluru is mystical Kata Tjuta, also known as the Olgas. This massive pile of rock domes dates back 500 million years.
Another popular attraction in the Red Centre is Kings Canyon, situated in Watarrka National Park, 304 km from Uluru. It is best known for its mighty chasm that splits the earth to a depth of 270 metres. The sheer red rock face of the canyon soars 100 metres above lush palm forests, sheltering them from the harsh desert conditions and creating a shaded contrast to the surrounding desert environment.
To the north lies picturesque Palm Valley with its time capsule of unchanged palm trees and cycads, and the oldest watercourse in the world. Nearby are historic Ormiston and Glen Helen Gorge, and the sheer cleft of Standley Chasm, which can all be explored on foot.
A visit to the Red Centre with Connections includes some special nights feasting on a 'camp oven' dinner cooked over the campfire at Kings Creek Cattle Station, and enjoying the hospitality of the Wallace Rockhole Aboriginal Community. We will take you to experience the real Outback.
